Early 20th century reproduction inkstand, after the original in Independence Hall by Philip Syng, reproduction by George C. Gebelein, Boston, MA, crafted with the exact standards and dimensions following Syng's inkstand in full detail. The stand has a scrolled, shaped Rococo outline with four equidistant shells and inward scrolling gnarled legs. There is a three-part top consisting of replacement sander (made by Gebelein for Mr. Williams), inkwell, and large central quill holder with articulated handle. The sander and inkwell fit into raised rings, the quill holder fits in and is secured by a twist lock construction. Engraved ''The original of this inkstand was made by Philip Syng 1703-1789, It was used by all in the signing of the, Declaration of Independence, and now rests in Independence Hall, It is here reproduced in the old manner by George C. Gebelein 1878-19, Presented to, Honorable Nicholas Longworth, by, Francis P. Garvan, Commemorating our fight for American Chemical Independence'' in script lettering to base. The Honorable Nicholas Longworth refers to US Senator Nicholas Longworth from Ohio, who married President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth. Maker's mark ''Gebelein'' to all three top pieces in shaped cartouches under bases, and maker's mark ''Gebelein'' in shaped cartouche along with ''BOSTON'' incuse on the back of the stand. Overall 8''h, 11''w, 8-1/8''d. Total approximate weight 40.4 troy oz. Provenance: Sloan's Auction House, Washington, DC, 1976.
