Description:

Rare Early Leonard Baby Catskill 6' Two-Piece with Two Tips
the tips short by 2" and 2-1/2", weighing 1 oz. Leonard called it "the lightest fly rod". The possible history of this diminutive rod, according to the fly rod historian Ed Herbst, has to do with a certain group of New York Anglers' Club members in the 1950s known as the "28-8-18 Club". This meant one had to catch a trout of 18" on a number 28 fly using an 8x tippet in order to join the group. These members requested that Leonard build the short delicate rods in order to help achieve this goal. Herbst goes on to say there is no defining proof whether this is true or trout fishing folk lore, but it sounds good. There is another story about the Anglers' Club having Catskill outings with ultralight cane rods, some being one piece. It was stated that because the tips were so thin it often took 10 or 12 started tips to get 2 or 3 completed ones. The wraps are dark green, and Leonard replaced the heavier stripper guide with a snake guide to keep the weight down to 1oz. The small cigar-shaped handle has a wooden seat measuring less than 2" and a sliding band lockup. The short reel seat was intended for the Mills "Fairy Reel", which was built to fit the small length seat. There is no Leonard stamping on the end cap, although it appears that it might have been overcleaned. The cane has areas of varnish craquelure but has not been touched. It has been said that the Baby Catskill received only one coat of varnish to keep the weight down. The rod comes in an olive-green bag with hang tag, in a Leonard tube.
