Early 20th century reproduction inkstand, after the original in Independence Hall by Philip Syng, reproduction by George C. Gebelein, Boston, MA, crafted with the exact standards and dimensions following Syng's inkstand in complete detail. The stand with scrolled and shaped Rococo outline with four equidistant shells and inward scrolling gnarled legs. The top is of three parts consisting of sander, inkwell, and large central quill holder with an articulated handle. The sander and inkwell fit into raised rings, the quill holder fits in by a twist lock construction. Engraved ''The original of this inkstand was, made by Philip Syng (1703-1789), It was used by all in the Signing, of the Declaration of Independence and, now rests in Independence Hall, It is here reproduced in the old manner by George C. Gebelein (1878-19-), To Mabel from Frank, Commemorating our Fight for, American Chemical Independence'' in script lettering to base. ''To Mabel from Frank,'' refers to Francis P. Garvan and his wife, Mabel Brady Garvan, for whom the Garvan Collection of Early American Silver at Yale University is named. The stand is made of heavy gauge silver. Maker's mark ''Gebelein'' to all three top pieces in shaped cartouches under bases, and maker's mark ''Gebelein'' in shaped cartouche with ''BOSTON'' incuse on the back of the stand. Overall 8''h, 10-3/4''w, 7-3/4''d. Total approximate weight 40.5 troy oz. Provenance: Bernie Krauss, 1992. Note: Gebelein crafted 24 of these stands, many of them ordered by Francis P. Garvan. There are both original letters and copies of correspondences between Mr. Garvan and George Gebelein in the Williams files. The letters concern matters such as length of time to fill orders, delivery arrangements, and specific engraved inscriptions to the bases Mr. Garvan requested. Copies of these letters will be supplied to the purchaser.
