Description:

Full-size folky swan decoy, 20th century, maker unknown, with a ''turtle back'' hump. It seems like the carver's interpretation of a peaceful swan on the water. The bottom has some remaining felt covering but no makers name was found. The body is light and rings as if hollow, but it is unclear where the wood was removed. There is a small section of wood removed from the bottom, running from the middle to the end; it is unclear why this was done. The paint has an off-white patina and some age craquelure, along with a few puppy teeth marks at the bill tip. A graceful piece of bird sculpture. 16-1/2''h, 11-1/4''w, 35-3/4''l. Provenance: Estate of Joseph ''Jay'' St. Mark, PhD, of Newtown, Connecticut, historian, appraiser, and collector of fine Americana.
